"Wingspan" is a celebration of the unseen. This painting explores the intricate and layered essence of a woman—her burdens, her joys, her victories, her sorrows—all that she carries but rarely reveals. The wings are hidden beneath draped scarves when the work is displayed, offering only a suggestion of the intricate tapestry that lies beneath.
This deliberate obscurity mirrors life itself: we can never fully know what lies beneath another’s exterior. Beneath her covering lies an "underpainting" of symbolic objects—piano keys, washers, pliers, flowers, coins, lace, and hardware as well as ink washes made by her children—each a fragment of her inner world. These elements represent the many facets of her existence: her labor, her passions, her resilience, her memories, her delicacy, and her strength. Together, they form the hidden architecture of her being.
Her wings extend beyond the box, embodying a spirit that soars past what is visible or allowed.
"Wingspan" invites the viewer to consider what lies beneath the surface—within themselves and others. It is a reminder of the vast, often hidden, capacity we all carry and the strength that emerges when we honor the fullness of our stories, seen and unseen.
